How often should I come to therapy?

If you are first starting out in therapy, generally it is best to attend sessions at least once a week. Waiting more than a week between sessions can interrupt the flow of the work, making it more difficult to resolve the issues you are trying to address. If you have been in therapy for enough time where you feel you have a good handle on the presenting problems that brought you into treatment, it might be possible to switch from weekly to biweekly sessions. On the other hand, if you are dealing with very complicated or distressing issues, it might be beneficial to attend sessions twice a week either at the start of therapy or at any point along the way.
